We're constantly getting turned on to new music here at Spinner HQ. Between our Free MP3 of the Day and weekly Free CD Listening Party, we hope you are too. To help further the cause, we're gonna bring you our personal must-hear music picks with Listen Up! -- Spinner's weekly spotlight on staff-approved artists who rock our world.
Who: Twin Sister
Hail From: Long Island, New York
Why We Love Them: Many bands do the ethereal thing well, but Twin Sister set themselves apart with a particularly lux, sexy sound that, with the help of singer Andrea Estrella's breathy vocals, comes off like the sonic equivalent of "slipping into something more comfortable," if you don't mind.
Essential Listening: 'Meet the Frownies' (MP3 Download)
[Get Winamp] [Download Help]
Exclusive Q&A with singer/guitarist Eric Cardona:
Which albums help you unwind?
Nick Drake's 'Pink Moon,' the Modern Lovers' self-titled album, CAN's 'Future Days,' Bjork's 'Vespertine' and Miles Davis' 'Kind of Blue.'
Please tell us about the first concert you ever saw.
Haha. The first concert I ever went to was Santana at Jones Beach Theater on Long Island. He did the rain dance and I thought he was a holy man because it rained. I was with my mom and dad and some family and it was the first time I'd ever smelled weed.
What's your biggest vice?
Eating frozen yogurt, walking into shoe stores, listening to 'Meet Me Halfway' by the Black Eyed Peas -- I can't choose one!
Which current major pop star do you identify with most closely?
S---. My grandparents like Michael Buble.
What's the story behind your band name?
Andrea [Estella] has a twin sister in Mexico. My mother is a twin sister. Bryan [Ujueta]'s dark twin fetish. Andrea made me a blanket and painted two twin sisters holding onto the back of a giant goldfish. It is beautiful and I named a song that and then we used it for our band name!
