"I said, 'There's a couple of scenes in that video that I thought were really pretty graphic for her.' Maybe Peaches or Courtney or something I would expect, but Shakira? Wow," Tunstall says. "There's a lot of information in those scenes."
While that may sound harsh, Tunstall says she was only using it to make a larger point. "We went on to talk about the fact that sometimes I feel that, for women in music, there is an unhealthy balance where sex is being used to sell music over the music selling the music," she reveals. "It's not with everybody, just with some acts that's a big part of why it's selling. I certainly didn't say that's why Shakira is selling, because she's a very talented, beautiful, graceful, very respected writer. She's a proper artist."
"Sexiness is very different from using sex to sell a record," she clarifies. "Music is sexy. It's always been sexy and I love sexy videos. I have not slammed sexy videos."
Tunstall also is certain why this mess started in the first place. "Tabloids love bitch fights," she says. "They love pitting us against each other and it's hard because there are not as many female artists. It's a real sisterhood. There could be a lot of support in music for other women. It's a very sexist, patriarchal business still."
And with that, she has a final message for her supposed nemesis: "I love you, Shakira. Don't let the bastards get you down."
