The young ladies of No Joy kicked off the Mexican Summer Records CMJ showcase with a massive wall of fuzzed-out reverb that brought stragglers running in from the bar, and that was just the beginning of the night's guitar heroics. After Soldiers of Fortune stormed the stage for a 20-minute, two-song set that left the crowd, which included Pavement bassist Mark Ibold, speechless, Robert Lester Folsom mellowed everyone's vibes with selections from his recently reissued 1976 "marina rock" album 'Music and Dreams.' The emotional roller coaster peaked when Tamaryn killed the lights, turned on the trippy video projections and enveloped everyone in a thick, warm blanket of shoegaze-y dream pop.
