"Last Summer is like the hipster version of 'Summer Days' from 'Grease,'" Robert Perlick-Molinari tells Spinner. "As I take a dip in the waters of Nostalgia, I wonder with all these lost moments, 'What can one make of it? How can I move on with the weight of this emotional baggage and insecurity tugging me earthbound when my soul desires a more cosmic venture?'"
The track is the B-side off of the Milwaukke-based group's 'This Moment EP,' which is due out Nov. 22, and a thematic flip side to that release's title track. After an initial idea by Robert, brother David -- who produced MGMT's 'Time to Pretend EP' -- rediscovered the tune and fleshed it out with the dramatic changes in the second and third sections.
"At this point after living in the moment -- you stop to reflect for a second which then starts this huge bittersweet trip down memory lane," David says. "At the end you wonder, 'Am I right for moving on? I am doing the right thing,' etc.?"
