Jimi Hendrix, Guitarist With Curtis Knight and the Squires, New York, 1965
After getting fired from Little Richard's band, 22-year-old Jimi Hendrix (far left) met soul singer Curtis Knight (center) near an elevator at a small New York recording studio. Upon learning Hendrix had just pawned his guitar for rent money, Knight gave him a guitar and invited him to join Curtis Knight and the Squires in 1965. (Also pictured in this promo shot is Marion Booker, top, and Ace Hall.) The following summer, Hendrix went solo and discovered distortion.
