J.P. Toulon, Singer of Pre-Teen Punk Band Old Skull, Dead at 30

Karoline Hanson Collins
Born in 1980, J.P. formed Old Skull with his younger brother Jamie and a friend, Jesse Collins-Davis, in Madison, Wis., in 1989. The band was quickly signed to Restless Records and released its album, 'Get Outta School,' which became a college radio favorite.
Produced by the Toulans' father Vern, 'Get Outta School' dealt with topics like AIDS, homelessness, hot dogs and skateboarding. Old Skull supported its Restless label mates the Flaming Lips, plus the likes of Sonic Youth and Gwar, soon earning the attention of MTV News, syndicated news show 'A Current Affair' and Newsweek.
A second album, 'CIA Drug Fest', followed in 1992 with an expanded lineup. After a tour of Japan, the band broke up, reuniting in 2005 for a CBGB's gig opening for the Exploited. In the spring of 2010, J.P. Toulon was back in Madison, where he served jail time before entering a drug rehab facility where he evidently beat his addiction.
Despite Old Skull's early acclaim, Toulon saw his share of tragedy. After his parents divorced in the early 1990s, his mother died in a train accident. His father subsequently died in May 2001.

Also, the lack of compassion saying from the person who said "if he ever did drugs, then he is a loser, sorry" is just disgusting! How many of us when older can state we NEVER did drugs? Not too many - and certainly not all of us are losers. I want to encourage youth to not do drugs also - but I also would hate to send the message that if you do drugs once - then you are loser for the rest of your life! What do you want the kid to do that reads that type of junk - kill themselves because they did drugs once?
RIP Toulon - not my style of music, but worth listening to none the less.

There's too much hate in this world, in THIS country! IMO 99% of it is from dang politics, but there is no need to hate anyone. We're upon a new holiday season; start now to love your fellow man and treat all the way you wish to be treated. Again, RIP, Jean Paul.
November 23 2010 at 3:37 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis is such an entirely sad scenario. IF YOU READ THE ARTICLE, it explains that Jean Paul was a young American Performer who lost both of his Parents before 2002 and, in not even having to guess at the difficulty of Show Business and the want to succeed, it is too bad that the extra intervention which Jean Paul may have needed did not come in time for him. Perfomance burn-out can occur in the BEST of Bands - no less also for those who are trying. We are now left with the Hope that Jean Paul's addiction might have turned out to be not just his success but, also his Music.

November 23 2010 at 1:46 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyTo everyone on here bashing, try to keep in mind that if you were to put out an album at 9 years old, it would probably be about jolly ranchers, buble gum, and He-Man! At 9 years old these kids were singing a song about people being homeless because they couldnt find jobs in America.......much like what is going on today, which means that it had to come from somewhere else for them to be singing about these topics at the age of 9, my guess of course would be the parents, which means that while your 9 year old asses were crying to mommy and daddy to buy you that new Nintendo, these kids parents were talking to their children about finance and government! Obviously it shows which parents actually taught their kids something and which ones didnt by the amount of ignorant posts on here.......I cant stress this enough, and its a lesson my parents actually taught me early in life.....1) if you dont have anything nice to say then dont say anything at all, and 2) think before you speak!
