"I constantly hear it," Mesirow tells Spinner. "I think that people just think that I sit around and listen to those records and take notes or something!"
Mesirow admittedly isn't too familiar with Bat For Lashes' catalogue, but she does cite Bjork as an amazing musical force, although not a direct musical influence. "I don't know anyone who doesn't at least respect what she does, but I don't do things intentionally to be like Bjork."
"I do think these types of comparisons always make an artist feel bad no matter what," adds Mesirow, stressing the fact that the press devalue the originality of artists' work by such comparisons. "Well, unless they're going for being the next Jerry Lee Lewis, and they're trying to do an homage to that person."
On Glasser's debut record, 'Ring,' listeners get a sense for Mesirow's all-embracing love for various genres of music, as the disc draws from everything from mystical dream-pop to ambient electro-dance rhythms. And while it's very much her own sonic blend, Mesirow does draw parallels between how she and Bjork approach their craft.
"I think I probably relate to her on a lot of creative levels because we both use our voice to express ourselves and enjoy picking up influences from other places."
Another aspect that Mesirow sees eye-to-eye with the Icelandic icon is the idea of conceptual fashion. "We both have an interest in conceptual fashion, which is something that is becoming a lot more mainstream now because of Lady Gaga."
Mesirow credits the pop artist with popularizing the trend, but adds that "she's kind of stolen Bjork's thunder." Having said that, though, Mesirow was impressed by Lady Gaga after catching a performance in Birmingham, England. "I didn't care about her at all until I saw her live," she says. "I was totally riveted by the whole show -- and from a purely pop-appreciator point of view, I was enthralled."
Performance and fashion aside, Mesirow still believes Gaga can do better.
"In terms of her music, I think she could do a lot more; if she's open to that kind of fashion then she must be open to better music because she's just a cartoon. She's incredible and I really love that -- if she didn't do it, I would hope that someone else would."

Your headline is a ridiculous misconstruing of what Glasser said. She perfectly understands pop music and how artists construct their own places in it.
