'The Power Is On,' The Go! Team
If you watch American professional football or are close to someone who does, odds are that you've seen the NFL Play 60 "Bus" commercial. Maybe you've even nodded your head to this contagious Go! Team track.
Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank joined his general manager, Thomas Dimitroff, the team's head coach, Mike Smith, and various Falcons players in the production of this commercial, which features the team riding on a school bus with kids on their way to get some exercise. The spot is a part of the NFL ad campaign for their Play 60 initiative, which promotes youth physical activity for 60 minutes a day.
Prominently featured in the "Bus" spot are players, kids and coaches bobbing along to 'The Power Is On,' with special emphasis given to a line from the song's lyrics: "Watch who's gonna get you back on the bus." Musically, the song's head-bob-inducing beat is accompanied by schoolyard singing that could easily be mistaken for a cheerleader chant coming from the front of such as bus.
Although the song, like most of The Go! Team's work, is deliberately rough, its application to football is clearly evident in its lyrics. For example:
"Watch who's coming at you/Why?/Who's coming through?/One a bit right, then we got two!"
A suitable musical choice for an initiative that encourages kids to get out and move, the Go! Team are world-renowned for their dynamic shows and their ability to make a crowd move. The band is from Brighton, England, and has been active on the British and European indie music scene since its debut album, 'Thunder, Lightning, Strike,' was released in 2004. 'The Power Is On' was the first single released from the record.
