Gorillaz Releasing Free iPad Album on Christmas

Never doubt Damon Albarn when he claims he's recorded an album's worth of material while on the road. The Gorillaz frontman told the NME recently that he'd being creating a new LP on his iPad during free time on the group's US tour in support of most recent release 'Plastic Beach.' Now, in case anyone thought that sounded like an outlandish boast, the singer and Gorillaz cohort Jamie Hewlett have announced plans to release said iPad creation on Christmas Day. For free, as Pitchfork reports.

"I wanted to make sure that it came out at the end of the tour because I don't want anyone to think I'd tampered with it," the sometime-Blur-star told Perth Now. "I literally made it on the road in America over a month. I didn't write it before; I didn't prepare it. I just did it day by day as a kind of diary of my experience in America."

As for the fact it's only nine months since the last Gorillaz album, Albarn explained, "If I left it until the New Year to release it, then the cynics out there would say, 'Oh well, it's been tampered with.' But if I put it out now, they'd know that I haven't done anything because I've been on tour ever since."

According to Hewlett, fans should stay tuned to Gorillaz.com to get their hands on the as-yet-untitled record. "At the moment, we've got an advent calendar on our website, and there is a daily door that opens to reveal a gift," said the comic book artist. "On Christmas Eve, a video for one of the new songs from the iPad album will be released. Then, on Christmas Day, fans get the whole album downloaded to their computer for free as a gift."
