'Icarus,' White Hinterland
Pairing White Hinterland's 'Icarus' with a lipstick case floating in space provides a surreal aura in Revlon's Just Bitten Lip Stain and Balm commercial. The voice of spokeswoman Jessica Biel adds an aphrodisiacal nuance to the advert, which culminates with a kiss.
Casey Dienel, the Massachusetts-raised, Portland, Ore.-based singer-songwriter-pianist who records under the group name White Hinterland, talks to Spinner a bit about Revlon's use of the song.
"One reason we are happy with the commercial is that Kathryn Bigelow directed it, and it looks very gorgeous," she says about the Oscar-winning director of 'The Hurt Locker.' "I am really intrigued to hear our songs outside of their original context."
Biel has been a Revlon spokeswoman since May 2009 and the 'Just Bitten' spot follows her 'Grow Luscious' mascara television ad campaign. As Dienel observes, the combination of Biel's seductive body language and a sepia lens brings the desired air of sexiness to the commercial. She is hopeful that White Hinterland's musical aesthetic echoes the visuals.
"I think when we are working on music, we're trying to make something beautiful: to set a certain tone. So it's nice to soundtrack a lush and lovely moment as opposed to something kind of violent," she says.
'Icarus' is the first track on White Hinterland's 2010 album, 'Kairos.'
