Speaking to Gigwise, Rowntree has revealed that the band -- who had reformed in 2009 for a number of festival appearances and shows at London's Hyde Park -- are "all back together again" and "great mates".
As previously reported, singer Damon Albarn had suggested in November last year that Blur "may" do something at the beginning of the new year.
But Rowntree's words are the strongest confirmation yet that the band are on course to rise from the ashes once more.
He said, "We've got all our mates back and that's the main thing. That's the one thing we don't want to lose. So yes, this year I would say something is definitely going to happen. Quite when, I don't know, and quite what I don't know –- but yes, we're all back together again and great mates.
"Who knows what it's going to end up like. What I do know is that we don't want to commit ourselves to anything vast at the moment. We're dipping our toes in the water, which is why we did the 'Fool's Day' single in the way we did."
