John Ficenec, from Omaha, Neb. -- a fertile ground for sensitive, lovelorn songwriters -- submitted a paragraph titled 'Advice for Young Lovers,' which is posted in its entirety on Matador Records' blog. In the piece he laid out tips gleaned from firsthand experience, including: Never think about marriage until you're 18; Play the field but don't cheat; don't date your best friends; and, for the sake of the general public, young lovers, please get a room.
"At the time, I'd just gone through a breakup, and then I found a new girlfriend," the teen told Rolling Stone.
The contest fit neatly with the kind of emotive, whimsical pop Belle and Sebastian has crafted during its long existence -- they put out their first record, 'Tigermilk,' the same year Ficenec was born -- and came with an incredible grand prize: Singer Stuart Murdoch will write a song about Ficenec that the band will release later this year, and by way of research for it, he'll pay Ficenec a personal visit in Omaha.
Luckily for Ficenec, Murdoch is a longtime fan of simple pleasures, including a hobby of riding city buses.
"I guess I'll take him around Omaha," Ficenec said,"though there isn't really that much to do."
