John Lydon Praises Lady Gaga but 'Hates' Green Day

According to the outspoken singer, not only does he admire her rise in the "corrupt" music business but to a certain extent believes he deserves credit for her success.
Speaking to the LA Times, he said, "I have done something good that Lady Gaga is so quite as mentally insane as she is. There's someone out there -- yeah, ultimately just shock, but the lyrics are so good. They really are. And so every now and again, as corrupt as the music industry is, there is one in there that can manipulate it properly. She's one. So applause to her."
However when it comes to the current crop of punk bands Lydon was less positive, particularly when it came to Green Day.
"Many of the punk bands are cop-outs and imitators and have made it easy for the likes of Green Peace -- Green Day, who I hate. I really ... I can't stand them."
He continued, "To me, they're like coat hangers, and haven't earned the right, they haven't earned the wings, to be wearing the mantle of punk. They haven't had to go through the violence, and the hate, and the animosity that us chaps way back when had to put up with. We had to fight for every single footstep."
As for the American punks' musical exploits, Lydon didn't mince his words, "I don't think I've done anything good if it ends up with Green Day on Broadway."

Some of you are trolling, I hope.

I just think they're even worse now because they're jumping on the punk bandwagon, trying to go political, wearing makeup etc. etc. Rolling Stone rated them number one punk band of all time which is just...crazy....I mean, especially since they're not even "punk". They beat Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols and eveyrone else. What the hell?

Green Day suck. don't care how big and rich they are but nothing they do will ever match NMTB or London Calling.

First off, whether you like them or not, Green Day's musical skill is significantly better than anything John Lydon could come up with. Lydon didn't do a thing for punk. It was Glen Matlock that wrote the lyrics, and they kicked him out when he wouldn't dress up in Vivienne Westwood's apparel and do what Malcolm McLaren wanted. And just for your information, Matlock was quoted in an interview as saying he liked Green Day, same thing with one of Joe Strummer's last interviews and Joey Ramone and others. Hell, Iggy Pop worked with them! Iggy's a fan and a friend. I could go on and on with the list.
Old bitter-ass Lydon swung around acting stupid in a band that was put together like a boy band. He has no right to go on about Green Day not earning their stripes. And unless you've heard Green Day's back story or know half as much about punk and music in general as you think you do, then you best keep your traps shut. Green Day started as friends in a tiny town, broken homes with all kinds of problem. They got together to form a band with what little money they could earn, were in the Gilman Street Project and made two albums. They realized if they wanted to keep being a full-time band, they'd have to go major because at that time independent bands didn't get as much help as they do now. They did, and they didn't change who they were. Idiots would couldn't look past the major label "wrappings". If it's good, it's good-- these people couldn't see that.
Green Day got flack from all directions. Did they quit? NO. They kept going because it was what THEY wanted. Green Day didn't ride off the success of their other albums, they put out an album when it felt right. Other bands just keep putting one album after another in hopes the success will be steady. And all through this, Green Day have stuck to what they believe in. They do it for themselves, for the fans, and don't give a shit about others opinions. They're husbands, fathers, role models, and brilliant people. Going to a concert feels like an intimate showing.
So, John Lydon can stick that up his ass.
Lydon didnt rest on his pistol laurels, afterwards he created Public Image Ltd, a very good and influential band.
Green Day and Gaga are both crap, and not appreciated by anyone who knows anything about music. Im sure Lydon is being ironic here.
I think it could be more that Lady Gaga seems to be trying to have fun while it lasts. She doesn't take herself too seriously and enjoys the pomp/circus atmosphere of the industry. Green Day on the other hand take themselves WAY too seriously. It's just music - relax, have some fun. No one wants to hear you preach about whatever social injustice you think you understand.
