Fresh off a world tour, the quartet of multi-instrumentalists recoded their fifth album, '100 Lovers,' with producer Craig Schumacher (Calexico, Neko Case) in the middle of the Arizona desert. Before the album drops on March 1, the band premieres their stop-motion '100 Other Lovers' video, starring a bird-loving babushka and many luminescent wings.
"Overall, the styling has an Eastern European feel. I wanted the piece to hint at a foreign location, as well as drawing you in with the faded grandeur of the ornate birdcages creating a dark-yet-magical atmosphere," Rodham explains. "The dream-like ambience and bright paper scrap birds, whose old-fashioned designs look as if they have been torn straight from a love letter, allude to the notion of romance. Yet, the film hints at the bittersweet nature of love, which prevails throughout the music."
This should get DeVotchKa fans sentimental and prepped for the album that promises "heartfelt romance and celebratory energy," as well as guest precussion from Mauro Refosco of Thom Yorke's Atoms for Peace and members of Calexico.
