The band's new video for 'Moves' poses as a trailer for a fictional biopic of the musician that begins back in the late '70s with a young Newman getting his guitar smashed by jocks and busking for used Kleenex. The flick ends with Newman celebrating his worldwide fame with an activity most of us dream of: Bathing in a tub filled with cash.
The video is so laugh-out-loud engaging (Three words: Cocaine pizza topping. Three more: Handgun guitar pick) that it's easy to miss the sparkling vocal harmonies, fuzz guitars and flawless hooks that have made the Canadian supergroup so enduringly popular. It's worth a second watch with your eyes closed.
The video, directed by Tom Scharpling, stars a cascading list of indie comedians and musicians: There's Superchunk and Mountain Goats drummer Jon Wurster as Newman, sporting a magnificent red wig; Julie Klausner as Neko Case; Ted Leo as Kathryn Calder; former 'Saturday Night Live' star Horatio Sanz as the band's multi-instrumentalist John Collins; actor Kevin Corrigan as Dan Bejar; and cameos by several 'Daily Show'' regulars. And there's even a quick trailer for a movie starring Paul Rudd and Bill Hader as pregnant men. Watch it below.
