Rivers Cuomo and crew recently recorded a cover of the familiar State Farm insurance jingle and posted it on their site. "When we were setting up The Memories Tour, the good people at State Farm asked the band, 'Would you sing our jingle for us?'" the band wrote on its site yesterday (Feb. 9). "Weezer then asked if the jingle was from a whole song, and if anyone recorded it lately. So State Farm went back to their headquarters to find out the answers."
The insurance company replied that they had found the lyrics to 'Like a Good Neighbor' -- written by Manilow when he was breaking into the music business -- and sheet music but were not certain if the entire song had ever been recorded.
"Rivers looked over the sheet music and said, 'this is a great song; we should record the whole thing.' So the band went into the studio and had a lot of fun rocking out with Mr. Manilow's tune, hoping he would be proud of the results."
There's no word if Manilow has heard Weezer's version yet.
As for the video, it was shot while Weezer recorded the roughly three-minute song in early December of last year. The video -- posted on YouTube as well as the company's Facebook page -- shows the band performing the song in studio. You can watch it below.
"We all hope the good times never leave us behind/We face our tomorrow we some piece of mind/No man has a promise of a life without care/And like a good neighbor State Farm is there," Cuomo sings.
Weezer, who released two albums in 2010, are currently off the road after performing their self-titled and 'Pinkerton' albums in their entirety on a handful of dates. The band has a May 27 date in Atlantic City before appearing at the Sonisphere Festival July 9.
Meanwhile, Manilow is releasing a new album entitled 'Fifteen Minutes' later this year.
