If you didn't know who she was 10 minutes ago, you do now: Esperanza Spalding has won the Best New Artist Grammy, beating out Mumford and Sons, Florence and the Machine, Drake and Justin Bieber.

Spalding comes as a breath of fresh air among this year's pop talent. Primarily known as a jazz bassist, the Portland, Ore., native has been a professor at Berklee College of Music and has recorded with M. Ward.

Her most recent album, 'Chamber Music Society,' was recorded in 2010 and features Spalding's vocals and upright bass playing. 2011 is already looking great for the young singer and we wish her continued success.

Because the Grammy's decided to give an award to someone who very few people have heard of people want to have this argument of who has talent. Problem with that argument is music is subjective. Some like country, some r&b, and some jazz. Listening to her Little Fly song was not pleasing for me, but who am I to judge? What we should be questioning is what is the Grammy's criteria for who wins. Is it based off factual things like sales, or popularity? Or is it some old guys sitting in a room deciding what they think is talent. If it is the latter then I am sorry to say the grammy's don't mean a thing. It is just a few people's biased opinion. I am willing to bet Esperanza knows some of the judges that awarded her this grammy.

never heard of esperanza... did she deserve to win?
good question...
I guess the music industry will do anything to see cds'
because i am sure she doesn't have the sales in cd's in the same zone as Drake or Justin Bieber or any of the other artist who were nominated in this catagory... so now she might and another 10 cd's to her total sales of the 100 she already sold...

so having the grammy got her what... nothing

selling milllions of cd's got the rest alot of money...

i'd take the money over a stupid trophy anyday!!!

Bravo Esperanza! She is wonderfully talented and a "true" artist. She is a Professor at Berkley University, played at the White House in May 2009 and is now a Grammy Winner! We are so proud of all of her accomplishments. Her voice is so melodic; it sounds like an instrument. She is truly a talented musician/artist. It is insulting that the music industry is manufacturing people & making a substantial amount of money, just because it is a "cute face."

I'm sorry FinMary You did NOT read my comment
Anyone that knows me Knows that I could never be called a music snob My musical preferences go across the board because I LOVE music, well written , well crafted and well performed music

The performers of the day chase after the spectacle the bling, the fame and think its all about the the performance, but the beauty of a performer
like a Bruce springsteeen, a Michael jackson, a Bob Marley a Kurt Cobain, a Dolly Parton and many more
is that they WROTE their songs, they sweated blood and tears to produce those 3 minute wonders that will always be rememered they had to CREATE their art.

Remember that great line from 'Going Underground 'sung by Paul wellers and the JAM

'The Public want what the public get! ?'

Yes Biber has a voice and yes it may give you a thrill but behind Bieber ia clever and powerful marketing machine that force feeds us Bieber the public with Bieber whether or not he's wanted and that same machine will eat him up and spit him out when he meets his sell by date, then replace him with the next heart throb.. It's machine music, produced by the music machine for money and profit.

BUT I will always remember my artists whatever the genre because their work will live on long after Bieber has vansihed from the airwaves.

How many people actually vote for the awards? Personally, I don't care for her style. I didn't care for the show in general. Mick was fun!

Great job Grammy! I think some of you don't realize that this is NOT a popularity contest. The category was “BEST new artist,” not “MOST popular artist.” I challenge all of the naysayers to listen to Esperanza Spalding for 5 minutes. She'll make a believer out of all of you. Congratulations Professor Spalding!

I'm an old lady with very little exposure to the current pop scene; however , I thought the sample of the winner's song was horrible!
