Presented the award by Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton, the singer was all smiles as he danced up to collect his prize. "Oh my God, I'm not prepared ... My heart is racing, I'm so excited ... Such a pleasant surprise."
After thanking his "support system" and telling the crowd, "You wonderful people, you all have great taste in music," he went on to recognise the influence British artists have had on his music. He said, "All the many British artists that inspired me. I'm in the presence of so many of my idols. I just saw Boy George and spoke with him."
The singer nabbed the prize from a shortlist which included Eminem, Kanye West as well as in-demand music producer David Guetta.
West won the award three times previously, in 2006, 2008 and 2009, while Eminem previously scooped the prize for Best International Male in 2001 and 2003.
Also nominated for a Brit Award for Best International Male Solo Artist for the second year running was Bruce Springsteen.
