Widespread Panic Honored by Georgia Congress for 25 Years of Rock 'n' Roll

They may respect the separation between church and state in Georgia, but they just allowed the world of Southern Rock to intersect with the state's congress. Earlier this week, members of Widespread Panic appeared in front of -- and performed for -- the Georgia Senate and House of Representatives. The occasion? The band was honored with resolutions in their name, honoring them for 25 years of public service in the name rock 'n' roll.

It was a surprising and welcome addition to Panic's 25th anniversary celebrations that they have planned throughout 2011. Rumors are that, following their conclusion, the band plans to take some time off before revving up their perpetual tour machine again. Guitarist John Bell, drummer Todd Nance and percussionist Sunny Ortitz attended the ceremony and performed an acoustic song in front of the awkward but well-intentioned lawmakers. Other performers to receive similar honors from Georgia in the past include natives Ray Charles and James Brown. Check out priceless video of the unusual performance below.
