Excepters' Clare Amory Dead at 35

Clare Amory, of the New York-based experimental electronic group Excepter, has died following a battle with cancer. Amory was 35, according to band member Jon Nicholson, who wrote about Amory's death on a blog for Secret Society Pyramid Snake, one of his other musical projects.

"My beautiful friend, and band mate Clare Armory has left our Planet Earth," Nicholson wrote. "Her soul has been set free to bless this mad universe that we all live in." He continued on to say his mother died of the same cancer after fighting the disease for nearly 30 years.

"Any age is too young to be taken from us," he wrote. "It hurts so much."

The band has not released additional details on Amory's cancer or on any public services. Since the announcement, the band's Facebook page has filled with tributes, memories and photos of Amory.

Excepter is an improv-based noise and electronic band that formed in Brooklyn around a decade ago, and is best known for its sprawling and occasionally marathon live performances. The group hasn't often risen to mainstream attention, though it's well-regarded in the experimental music communities and last year made the cover of the acclaimed music journal Wire.

On Friday, the author of that Wire piece posted to his personal blog his full e-mail interview with Amory.

"It took a while for my brain to want to play Excepter," Amory said. "Now it's good to be truly free and with the other weirds. You are an Excepter or you're not an Excepter whether you started playing yet or not and really we're all Excepters.

"I always know it's going to be dreamlike, the longer I play like this the less the number of hours matter. We could play from now until we die I think, we would just sleep and eat right there while the others kept it going. When you pause to eat you get really good ideas."

Clare was my cousin and she lived her life with beauty and passion. I will miss her deeply, but find solace in knowing that she truly experienced life and that she left this world better having been touched by her radiance. She will continue to inspire me.

How very, very sad that most of the comments in this post are from people with such damaged souls. It doesn't matter what kind of band she was in or whether or not you liked her music. What matters is that she was young, robbed of her life almost before it began; each of you are still happily snug in front of your computers. I caution you that just like Clare, you could die long before your time and what would you have your internet brethren say about your life. None of you even knew her; I did. She was my first cousin, we shared family. Unless you have first-hand knowledge, don't diminish the life of another. Shame on each of you who feels it justifies your existence to pass judgment on people you don't even know.

Why do people even comment on a young woman's death when they don't even know who she was or the band she was in???

R.I.P. Clare

The article listed the band as experimental, as in not mainstream. If they wanted to sound mainstream, they'd change what they're doing, and abandon their style. So, whether you like their sound or not, at least give credit to them for being out there and doing something. 35 yrs. old is less than half a lifetime, and she probably accomplished more during that time, than many of the authors of some of these idiotic comments.
RIP.

There is something seriously wrong with this music. There is nothing pleasing about it or maybe thats the point? Dunno, but I would say it's going to be a short lived phenonmenon. Rest in Peace Clare; you got a raw deal. My dad died way to young from this plague (cancer) as well.

It doesn't matter what kind of music she played, liked or listened to---what matters is that her life is over, way too soon!!! 35 is way too soon!!!!
