"We went back to our roots to write and record 'Smithereens 2011.' It's our first album of all-new original material in 11 years, and we felt the need to return to where it all began for us over 31 years ago," singer Patrick DiNizio tells Spinner.
"To recapture the excitement of an 'old-school' Smithereens album, we wrote the new songs at a tiny rehearsal room on Avenue B and 6th street on the lower east side of NYC, where we originally rehearsed and wrote all of the tunes for our 1988 Capitol release 'Green Thoughts,' and reunited with our 'Especially for You' and 'Green Thoughts' producer Don Dixon," DiNizio says. "As a result, I think that we produced an album that sounds like a classic vintage Smithereens album, but is also thoroughly fresh, contemporary and modern-sounding as well."
Dixon, also known as the "Fifth Smithereen" spoke of the band's approach to recording, saying, "We cut our teeth on albums that were carefully crafted to take you someplace. That's all we ever want to do. Take you someplace better."
DiNizio, guitarist Jim Babjak, drummer Dennis Diken, and bassist Severo "The Thrilla" Jornacion, have steadily toured in recent years. Since their last album, 'God Save the Smithereens,' the band have released tributes to the Who and the Beatles, while DiNizio has been curating Living Room Concerts where he plays shows in the homes of fans.

Awesome new tune, I'm glad they are back with new material. I've seen them twice over the years, I hope they decide to tour Pittsburgh in the future, hint hint?
