Copping was responding to fan criticism over his decision to book Def Leppard as the final night headliner for the festival in June. Defending his position, Copping told RockAAA.com, "I booked Def Leppard because they deserve it, because they are big enough to do it."
The organiser went to explain why he hadn't booked Metallica. To his mind, the metal titans are suffering from over-exposure that does no one any favours. He said, "Metallica have toured extensively and have been here for seven of the last eight summers. For me that is definitely overdoing it."
He added, "Metallica are a great band but if they went away for three or four years then came back then they'd be even bigger. When they keep coming back they become boring."
Not that Metallica's fans have to worry too much. They'll be able to catch their heroes at this year's Sonisphere festival in Hertfordshire in July where they'll be joined for the first time in the UK by Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth.
