"Obviously, we've never played to as many people as this before," lead singer and guitarist Daniel Blumberg said Wednesday night, looking out at the hundreds of people gathered on the lawn behind Stubbs BBQ in Austin. "It is quite funny."
While some folks were likely there to see James Blake, Smith Westerns or Duran Duran, all of whom were yet to perform, Yuck had plenty of takers for its 'We Love the '90s' time warp.
This young quartet is half-British, a quarter American, a quarter Japanese and 100 percent '120 Minutes.' On opener 'Holing Out,' they raised a flag for Sonic Youth's 'Daydream Nation' -- an album that came out in 1988, but whatever -- while 'Get Away' conjured sweet memories of Smashing Pumpkins' '1979' and 'Blue Album'-era Weezer.
While Yuck may soon be playing to crowds much bigger than Stubbs can accommodate, Blumberg isn't quite ready for his close-up. Looking like Cate Blanchett's Dylan in 'I'm Not There,' the hollow-cheeked, curly-haired singer kept his shoulder blades around his earlobes and eyes on the floor. Still, Yuck left a good taste in everyone's mouth.
