It was a year ago at SXSW that OFF! played its first gig, and singer Keith Morris celebrated the anniversary Friday (March 18) by essentially carrying on a running conversation with himself, interrupted now and then by songs, at Spin's day party at Stubb's in Austin, Texas.
The ex-Black Flag and Circle Jerks singer held forth on lying politicians and greedy corporations, thanked the rest of the bands on the bill -- "even the ones that, I would never use the word 'suck'" -- and also found time to parse the punk-rock supergroup's introduction as "the most pissed-off band at SXSW."
"We're only pissed off because we have to do so much driving around in circles," he said.
Sometimes Morris sang, too, howling out lyrics through a ferocious barrage of serrated guitar and the cops-at-the-door pounding of the rhythm section on songs that rarely lasted longer than 90 seconds, including the volatile, churning 'Darkness' and stinging, sing-songy guitar line that pierces 'Now I'm Pissed.'
"But we're still not the most pissed off band at SXSW," Morris assured the crowd.
The brevity of the band's songs was clearly a point of pride.
"We've got 10 minutes left?" Morris asked with, yes, 10 minutes left. "Dude, we can play 18 songs in 10 minutes."
They didn't, but you wouldn't want to bet against him.
