Reruns of the show will appear on BBC4 from April 7 in its original Thursday night slot, starting with the earliest archived recordings from 1976. It first aired in 1964, but according to Metro, poor archiving standards meant they didn't start keeping tapes until 12 years later.
The leading pop music show ran for 42 years and broke many leading artists in the UK, but falling ratings and the growing competition from 24-hour music channels led to the show being dropped in 2006.
While some fans welcomed the return, others were unhappy that the BBC wouldn't film new episodes.
Pop Justice founder and journalist Peter Robinson expressed on Twitter why he thought the BBC had missed the point.
"What really f---s me off about the BBC4 wheeling out classic TOTP episodes from 1976 onwards is that they are admitting how culturally important TOTP was as a cultural record, but they don't seem to mind that pop music in 2011 is not being archived in a similar way.
"I don't think 'but there is the internet now' is a very strong argument. On that basis, the BBC might as well get rid of the news too."
As for placing the repeat broadcasts being placed on BBC 4, the digital-only station which targets older viewers, Robinson added, "BBC1's the only place TOTP can work. Commercial stations would get balance wrong [and] can't offer big enough audiences to attract big names.
