The band, composed of Peter Buck (R.E.M.), Scott McCaughey (The Minus 5), songwriter Steve Wynn and Linda Pitman, got together over their love of a great American pastime: baseball.
Spinner caught up with Wynn and McCaughey before their show at this year's SXSW festival to discuss their favorite sports teams and the concept behind the group that they've dubbed the Baseball Project.
"I think there was a time in music, in punk rock days, where there were the rockers and the jocks and those two things didn't go together -- [they were] mortal enemies," Wynn told Spinner.
"But I think we found out there are a lot of people who love the kind of music we play and have always played -- but also love baseball. And the two have never gone together ever before until this band. Now I think there are a lot of people that want to be in on it."
