"Antony's an amazing artist but he is also a very supportive friend," Wasser tells Spinner.
"We have lived through a lot together and I feel like once you have Antony as a friend, he's a friend for life." The pair met after Wasser joined his band in 1999. "Making music with him and the Johnsons was a thoroughly wonderful experience for me. It brought me back to life."
Keeping artistic company with the likes of Lou Reed has been another perk of being a part of New York City's music scene. "I met him through Antony and we have stayed friends ever since," Wasser says of the former Velvet Underground frontman. "Lou is most definitely a hero of mine. 'Street Hassle' is one of my favorites [because] 'I Want to Be Black' is on it. What else do I have to say? I can relate!"
Though the former Dambuilders member isn't particularly star-struck during these encounters, one particular meeting got Wasser somewhat wobbly at the knees. "I was a little nervous meeting Elton John," she admits. "But the fact is that everyone wakes up every morning the same way. He was so generous and relaxed that it was not long before I felt comfortable."
As she tells us, meeting people in all walks of life is one of the perks she loves most about NYC living. "Diversity baby," she says. "It's the only way for me."
'The Deep Field' is available now via Play It Again Sam Records.
