UK sales of singles through independent record stores came in at more than double that of 2010, while album sales rose by 20 percent on the previous year.
According to the Official Charts Company, Foo Fighters' album 'Medium Rare,' a collection of covers, was the best-selling vinyl album on the day with Gorillaz's 'The Fall' coming a close second.
In terms of 7" singles, a re-issue of Queen's 'Keep Yourself Alive' and Radiohead's previously unreleased tracks 'Supercollider' and 'The Butcher,' were among the most popular.
Offering over 250 special releases, this year's Record Store Day saw around 180 stores take part in the UK on Saturday, April 16. Co-ordinator Spencer Hickman was clearly enthused by the success of the fifth Record Store Day.
He said (via the NME), "Record Store Day has been an overwhelming success. It seems to have struck a chord with artists, labels and music fans alike. It is now one of the most significant music events of the year."
