Both the BBC and Channel 4 had got in contact with McGee about overseeing a film drama of the label, which had the likes of Oasis, Teenage Fanclub and Primal Scream in its portfolio before it disbanded in 1999.
The Scotsman said in an interview with Radio 5 Live (via the BBC) that Irvine Welsh, author of such novels as 'Trainspotting,' was lined up to create the screenplay but his idea of creating one character out using a number of famous managers as inspiration -- including Sex Pistols boss Malcolm McLaren -- was shot down by the TV networks.
Speaking of the "morphing" of characters, McGee said, "That to me was a 10 out of 10 idea. But not for the BBC or Channel 4, they want a dramatisation of Creation Records straight, so yesterday me and Irvine turned it down. It was going to be called something like Beyond The Eruption."
He added, "If we were going to do a literal Creation thing let's do it on one of two subjects. Either when we were out of our minds 88-94, or the whole Britpop political thing when Labour were asking me if I could get young Britain back to work and we were going to Downing Street. The rest of it is too much of a freak show."
The story of the label's journey from cultdom to international success was recently the subject of the documentary 'Upside Down.'
