Brian Wilson May Retire From Performing Because of Stress, Hallucinations

Brian Wilson could be set to hang up his touring boots in the next year, after the 68-year-old admitted life on the road is becoming increasingly difficult.

The Beach Boys legend has conceded that stage fright and hallucinations still affect him and that he is seriously considering packing in live music as a result.

In an interview with the London Evening Standard, Wilson described how psychological difficulties -- such as pre-show anxiety and voices in his head -- as well as his increasing age are making touring "very hard work."

Wilson is playing a number of shows in the UK in September, including a three-date run at London's Royal Festival Hall, but it could be the last time he visits the country.

"I'm always afraid just before I go on stage because I'm not sure how the concert's going to work," Wilson said. "As I get older it gets harder for me. But when I'm sitting down at the keyboard and my band's behind me, I can do it."

When asked by the newspaper if he has considered retiring from live music, he replied, "Oh God yes. Another year, maybe. This could be the last time I play [in London]. I'm going to miss it but I'm getting a little bit old for touring."

He added that voices in his head still utter "negative things" such as "You're going to die" and "You better watch out." While playing live helps counteract the voices, they are "always" with him.
