Yes, the 2011 MuchMusic Video Awards are upon us.
Arcade Fire, Metric, Drake and Justin Bieber have been nominated in multiple MMVA categories for the June 19 two-hour extravaganza, which should be trending on Twitter for, well, two hours. The event marks the third time Drake, Arcade Fire and Bieber have vied for awards in the last 12 months following the Junos and Grammy Awards earlier in the year.
MuchMusic's 'New.Music.Live' yesterday revealed all nominees in the 14 categories with Arcade Fire up for International Video of the Year by a Canadian and the fan-voted UR FAVE Artist for 'The Suburbs.' Makes you wonder if Bieber and Drake might recreate 'The Suburbs' closing fight scene should hostilities arise backstage between them. Or, better yet, maybe they'll just reprise their homoerrotic duet from the Junos.
Meanwhile, Metric's 'Stadium Love' is vying for MuchLOUD Rock Video of the Year alongside electro upstart Abandon All Ships for 'Geeving,' Billy Talent, Hail the Villain and Simple Plan. 'Stadium Love' is also up for MuchFACT Indie Video of the Year alongside others, including You Say Party for 'Lonely's Lunch.' A win for You Say Party would be a nice postscript after a tumultuous 12 months following the death of drummer Devon Clifford and their recent announcement calling it quits.
International Video of the Year artist nominees include Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Eminem, Katy Perry, Kanye West, Rhianna, Britney Spears, David Guetta, Jennifer Lopez plus MMVA co-host and Justin Bieber sweetheart Selena Gomez. Expect Gaga or Mars to win as both will be somewhere in the MMVA madness.
Eminem, Spears, Mars and Gomez are also up for UR FAVE International Artist. Lady Gaga -- nominated in the category for 'Born This Way' -- is also performing, which is expected to be over-the-top, but then when are her performances not?
Canada has its own International Video of the Year category, which is basically a Canadian artist's video that has garnered international attention. Here, Arcade Fire, Bieber, Drake and Avril Lavigne are in the running while the same four are up for the fan-voted UR FAVE Artist award alongside wildcard choice Down With Webster.
Elsewhere K'Naan and Shad are in the running for MuchVibe Hip-Hop Video of the Year but neither artist is expected to perform. Those who will be raising the roof at MuchMusic headquarters in honour of the MMVAs are Gomez, Lavigne, Mars, the Black Keys and City and Colour. Oh, and you can expect Gaga to either open or close the red carpet event -- get your iPhone cameras ready!
The 2011 MMVAs will be broadcast live in Canada on MuchMusic and in the U.S. on Fuse at 9PM EST. And if you're in Canada and you miss it, don't worry because you'll get to see it again. And again.
