Gregg Allman to Publish 'Unflinching' Tell-All Memoir of Allman Bros. and Beyond

Penning an autobiography has become a rite of passage for the upper echelon of classic rock royalty as of late, with memoirs by Keith Richards (Rolling Stones), Steven Tyler (Aerosmith) and Sammy Hagar (Van Halen) all recently climbing bestseller lists. Earlier this week, the Who's Pete Townshend announced that his long-publicized autobiography -- which allegedly addresses the topic of being molested as a child -- finally has a publisher. Well, now the Allman Brothers Band's Gregg Allman is throwing his history into the mix as well. William Morrow has announced that they will publish the memoir from this Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer in the first half of 2012.

The book will reportedly be a tell-all, which is good because Allman certainly has a lot to tell -- from the untimely death of two of his bandmates, including his brother Duane, during separate motorcycle crashes, to a failed marriage with Cher which turned him into an unlikely celebrity, much to his chagrin. And don't forget all the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll that followed him from the Allman Brothers Band's storied beginnings on through their decades-apart heydays -- and, of course, the low points in between. A press release for the book calls it Allman's "unflinching story." His life certainly includes tragedy (being diagnosed with Hepatitis C in 2007), triumph (a liver transplant in 2010), drama (multiple drug-related arrests) and even comic relief -- he appeared in a cartoon cameo on an episode of the animated television series 'Family Guy.'

"When I got out of high school, I thought, I'll take a year or two off and play the clubs, get this out of my system and then go to med school," says Allman in a statement. "More than 40 years later, I figure it's finally time to write about this crazy journey that's taken me around the world and back."

We'll be all too glad to go along for the ride.
