According to a press release -- and reported by Exclaim -- the respected musician is "being recognized for his accomplishments and contributions to Canadian culture," as well as his 1994 album, 'Music for the Native Americans,' which showcased Native artists internationally.
"By transcending cultural and geographical barriers, he stands as a model for both aboriginal and non-aboriginal artists alike," said the statement.
The honor comes during a busy 2011 for Robertson who released his latest studio effort 'How to Become Clairvoyant' and was also inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in Toronto.
Robertson is also reportedly planning to write his memoir after a few attempts with ghost writers didn't pan out.
Earlier this month, news broke regarding Robertson appearing on a series of Canadian postage stamps alongside Bruce Cockburn and Kate and Anna McGarrigle.
Actor Michael J. Fox will also become an Officer of the Order of Canada at Friday's ceremony in Ottawa.
