Courtney Love Kicked Drugs After Watching Britney Spears' Meltdown

Courtney Love has claimed she is free of narcotics and credits seeing Britney Spears' breakdown as helping her kick at least one habit.

In a wide-ranging interview that focuses on her history of drug addiction, the rock icon sounds off about a culture of drug dependency in celebrity circles and her determination to remain relatively sober.

Speaking to addiction recovery web site The Fix, the former heroin and crack user claims she last took narcotics in 2005 and has recently kicked her dependence on one prescribed drug, even though she admits she still self-medicates.

"After Britney freaked out a couple of years ago, and her toxicology report said she was taking a much lower dose than I was, I decided to get off that s--- [Adderall]," she said. "I knew I had to work a serious program again."

Love alleges she helped saved Kelly Osbourne's life twice after overdosing -- anecdotes in response to Ozzy's daughter commenting she looked like a crackhead on TV. The Hole singer goes to onto claim stars on both American coasts are huge addicts.

"The biggest celebrities and movers and shakers I know are also some of the worst alcoholics and drug addicts," she professed. "But you'd never know it by looking at them. Now that I'm trying to stay sober, I try my best to stay away from that crowd, but it's not always easy."

Kurt Cobain's widow says she has attempted to make up to those she has hurt, as 12-step programmes advise. Love says producer Jimmy Iovine has framed an apology letter from her, while another to an ex-manager was less well received when she asked him to hear her new demo.
