In security-camera footage of the incident, King is suddenly struck and thrown against a concrete pillar by LaBelle's body guards and an unidentified woman. King subsequently tries to get up and leave the area but he falls continuously.
"Apparently, defendant LaBelle believed King was standing too close to her (no doubt expensive) luggage, even though he was oblivious to her presence and the danger he was in," King's attorney John Raley said in the lawsuit filing. "LaBelle lowered the window of her limousine and gave a command to her bodyguards. They sprang into action."
According to police, the young cadet smelled of alcohol after the event, but the man insists he had only two drinks during his flight. King is seeking punitive and actual damages from the 67-year-old singer, three members of her entourage, an airport taxi dispatcher and the airport itself. The plaintiff has since been expelled from West Point because of the incident and placed in a mentorship program that requires active duty.
"There can never be any justification for the savage battery of King," the lawsuit proclaims. "Defendant LaBelle is hot-tempered herself ... She was a full participant in the cruel attack on King. She ordered it, and never tried to stop it."
To add more confusion to the situation, a police report filed that evening states that an altercation occurred between King and LaBelle's limo driver Zuri Edwards. The driver told police that he had been struck on the cheek by a verbally aggressive King. Edwards, however, did not want to press charges and said that he "could not remember what happened before or during the attack."
At the end of the video, Houston police officers are shown taking photos with LaBelle while King is wheeled out of the area on a stretcher. King's blood can been seen a few feet away.

I feel sorry for the cadet because not only is his football career over, his military career is as well. All because a "report" was filed without charges. This kid was in the wrong place at the wrong time (in the presence of pricey luggage, really?) and he will spend the rest of his life (regardless of court ruling) paying for it. Mrs. LaBelle should take it upon herself to fess up and contact the proper West Point chain of command and get his expulsion overturned! The body guards, Houston Police Deputies, and Mrs. LaBelle herself should all have to pay for the unfair beating and treatment this young man has had to endure.

If i'm standing somewhere minding my own business and someone did that to me, I would come back swinging and defend myself. If he was a threat to the "WANNA BE THUGS" or" MISS THANG" He would have showed agrresion. How is talking on a phone minding his own business a threat? .Tthere was no FEAR for anyones life here except the CADET. He would have been justified if he had of shot them as he was the only one in true fear. They went in his private space, he did not enter theirs. The cadet should be compensated and he deserves a public appology from all involved. Hell, it would have been funny if someone grabbed the luggage and ran with it when they attacked the innocent guy. They weren't too concerned if they left it un-attended to do what they did. Why weren't they arrested on the spot? She and her guards need to be punished to full extent and this should be an example to all of those high snooty people that they have to abide by laws too and if not, pay the consequences. They are no better than the rest of us. Makes you wounder who was paid off for favors?

I must admit that this article has changed my opinion of Patti LaBelle in a negative way. Regardless of who you are, that situation could have been handled much better without the violence and I am a former infantry officer somewhat familiar with violence. This whole situation was uncalled for by Patti and her people.
November 15 2011 at 3:10 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe cadet is standing there talking on the cell phone long before Patti Labelle's henchmen came with her luggage. The thugs placed the luggage about 5 feet from the cadet. If they were so concerned about the luggage why didn't they place the bags near the truck. After they place it by the cadet as he is on the phone ignoring the limo and the thugs, one thug body checks him and the cadet puts his arm up defensively, but he continues to talk on the phone. He is then beaten and thrown into the concrete pillar. The cadet's blood is visible on the ground. How can anyone say he wasn't beaten..did the doctors staple his head for no reason? Who the hell do these cretins and their has been boss think they are. I have been a fan of patti's for decades, no more. The cop's fawning over Ms Labelle is shameful and he should be fired or at least suspended without pay for a few months. Patti Labelle should be made to pay through the nose, her bodyguards should do time in prison for assault and battery, and the cadet should be reinstated. I will call West Point!
June 06 2011 at 11:03 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI then went and read the lawsuit that Cadet King filed, do you know that the Houston Police Dept and these THUGS claimed that he initiated the confrontation and as a result, he was dismissed by West Point. It is unimaginable that the police department acted in this reckless manner-I hope heads roll over this brutal assault.
These men are simply bodyguards-they have no legal right to act proactively and assault a private citizen in this manner-they should be charged with assault NOW.
The police having their picture being taken with Ms LaBelle after this bloodied West Point Cadet is wheeled away is disgusting and disgraceful. Does anyone know the hight standards that need to be met to get into West Point? This was assault, pure plain and simple and I hope it costs LaBelle a fortune and the officers need some heavy disciplining. Bodyguards do not have the right to act like THUGS..

The cadet contiues with his phone, remaining in the same spot after their arrival. The cadet, still minding his own business, actually turns to his left and, is practically at a 90 degree angle to the gody guard in the maroon shirt, when the body guard walks up on the cadet and checks him (the cadet) with his chest (body guard's).
The cadet turns toward the body guard, who has just made an overtly aggressive move towards him, extends his left arm and, with an open hand, he pushes the body guard in a manner to regain his (cadet's) personal space. The cadet's moves are purely defensive in nature, he wasn't even facing the aggressor when he (body guard) made his first move.
For someone who has had martial arts, military or law enforcement training you should redily recognize that the cadet does not lean into his shove, he simply extends his arm, open handed, and regains his personal space. If you aren't convinced by the video or these small details consider this, the cadet's right hand and phone remain at his right ear until the second body guard charges in and punches the cadet in his mouth.
The cadet was standing in that area before the body guards arrived, minding his own business. He remained in a two foot square area until he was chest checked by a body guard. His actions and reactions were defensive in nature throughout the entire incident. The cadet was still on the phone when he got punched in the mouth by a second body guard. The cadet had no idea how much aggression that chest check should have signalled; evidenced by his failing to drop his phone and take up a fighting stance from which to better protect himself and from which to go on the offensive.
You have to be kidding me. I took Aikido, and there's no way what this young cadet did would be considered "defensive." These bodyguards pushed the wandering kid away from the baggage and that should have been the end of it. Anytime someone pushes you is a good time for you to get off your cell phone BEFORE physically touching ANYONE who has just assaulted you.
Instead, this kid arrogantly pushes the bodyguards back, tit-for-tat, WHILE he continues to chat on his phone. How do the bodyguards know that this kid isn't trying to create some sort of diversionary incident in order to distract them from a second party intent on attacking LaBelle? They did what they were trained to do. Did they go too far? Ofcourse. There was a lot of unnecessary roughness. But make no mistake, this kid isn't innocent. They pushed him, and he pushed back. End of story.
"Instead, this kid arrogantly pushes the bodyguards back, tit-for-tat, "
You're kidding, right? His movement was clearly a split-second reaction to what happened to him. Nothing more. Shame on you for trying so hard to find a way to blame the victim.
Are you kidding me? This kid is nothing but innocent! He was assaulted and if I am correct (which I am) he has the right to protect himself. He responded to the situation with the same level of force which was initially presented to him. He is trained in combat and as you can see all he did was try to protect himself against the onslaught of blows. END OF STORY!
June 07 2011 at 9:43 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate downWhy the heck does LaBelle need all those "body guards"? She's pretty much a has been! Two observations besides the obvious:
1. Kudos for the cowboy in the white hat for coming to King's aid.
2. Thumbs down for the paramedic/cop? for having his photo taken with LaBelle after helping the guy she had beaten up and he had to treat! Crickets anyone?
3. Secret Service guarding the president would not even act in this way. Does LaBelle think she's more important?
Used to like this woman. No more.
Please people, let's not make this into a racial thing. Why must it be that whenever there are different races involved in an incident, it has to be racially motivated?? If this had happened and all were of the same race, what would your reasons be then? What would you blame?
This incident is the result of a narcissistic, things her **** don't stink, get off of your ******* pedestal BITCH who happens to be black. (By the way, I am black), and not only do I think she was very obviously in the wrong as were her body guards ( who are adults and should be able to think for themselves and know right from wrong and just proves that they are ignorant, followers who can only get a job that doesn't require them to think but use their bodies and physiques that they only got because all they do all day is spend time in the gym, to beat people up!!!) Wow, I hope that all made sense!
I've seen this woman on talk shows in the past and she really does think VERY highly of herself. It's really pathetic . She has a sense of entitlement which is just one of the very many characteristics of a narcsissist that she posseses!
This is very disconcerting. This could happen to anyone going about their own business at the airport.
When I travel, personally I don't care or pay attention to what other limousines are parked and being loaded. And I don't want to have to be fearful of some thugs - bodyguards - telling me where to stand or talk on the phone.
LaBelle apparently believes that she is the center of the universe. And a racist.
From viewing the video, I didn't see any reason to think that this man was interested in her property.
The thugs should be under arrest - attacking someone and publicly beating them, on camera. Arrest and lock-up.
LaBelle should be charged as well.
The police officer - fired.
West Point's actions? What an embarassment to the American people in this situation. A disgrace.
.
Hope she and her bodyguards go to jail and pay thought the nose. Who the hell does she think she is??? Standing to close to her stupid luggage? Give me a break!
