Peelander-Z Get 'Geeky,' Give a Shout Out to New Kids on the Block -- NXNE

Peelander-Z are not Japanese, American, or even human. According to legend, they come from the planet Peelander and are here to rock your bodies with three-chord punk and high energy entertainment. Their shows have been known to include hilarious antics involving human bowling pins, giant squids and jump rope. Oh, and sometimes the band, now based in New York City, sing about food and devouring smiles. If you're a fan of the Power Rangers, Japanese cartoons or the late Randy "Macho Man" Savage, you will not want to miss out. Read on for our totally off-the-wall interview with alien commander Peelander Yellow.

So tell me about the new album.

We are actually going to be re-releasing an older album first, like a best of compilation. But next year, we'll be releasing this new space album, 'Peelander Planet.' Do you know the story of Peelander-Z?

No, please tell me.

We are not Japanese, we are not American, we are not human, we came from planet Peelander, very far away from here. We're a kind of happy alien. Our next, next album is a space vacation from Peelander planet to the planet Earth.

Tell me about your bandmates?

Also in the band is our most sexy boy, Peelander Red. Peelander Green, most party boy -- you fall in love when you see his smile. Peelander Pink is a kind of fairy. Peelander Black is the most wise Tokyo Cowboy.

What are your special powers?

We are not humans, we eat everybody's smiles. It gives us more energy and more crazy for us to do more happy show -- that is our power.

So you play pop-punk music?

Yeah, we play a lot of three-chord, Ramones-style punk, but with more happy, happy, happy, styles. We do human bowling on stage, jump rope, "rainbow dance." We are not a regular band; we never just play music, we want to play with everybody. Don't be shy, come to our show and join our entertainment show. We also have a live squid that will be onstage. But don't worry, he won't bite anyone, he might just shake hands with you.

Sounds amazing. I heard you recently announced a new music video?

We are doing a live version of our 'E.I.E.I.O.' video because the last one is animated.

You are fans of Japanese cartoons and Kaiju, the Japanese monster style, correct?

Yes. We may blow up some buildings when we come to Toronto for NXNE, but don't worry, we will fix whatever we break.

Do you have a favourite Japanese cartoon?

I like 'Neon Genesis Evangelion.' I also love 'Mazinger Z,' 'Gundam,' 'Macross,' 'Mickey Momo'... everything! I have over 1,000 comics in Japan; I am what you call "geek," or "otaku" in Japanese. Call me Yellow Otaku!

What do you do when you're not playing music?

I'm a big fan of wrestling. I like to watch Mexican Lucha Libre, old, local wrestling, and I'm crazy about Japanese idols like New Kids on the Block. I don't care so much about WWE, but I'm sad to hear about Randy "Macho Man" Savage dying. I'm going to eat a sausage for him.

I could see your style working with 'Yo Gabba Gabba.' Has that happened yet?

We want to do a collaboration with them; I'm a huge fan. I want to make a lot of movies with them all over the USA.
