The CFDA-nominated Nepalese designer, who recently launched his own collection after five years as design director at Bill Blass, handpicked the Baltimore electro-rapper to bring his new resort-wear line to life, helping "showcase the collection in a way that highlighted its bright and graphic elements."
To that end, Rye Rye's 'New Thing' clip was inspired entirely by Gurung's line, from the design, down to the lighting.
"Everything from the repeating floral pattern to the LED light inspired by the graphic print on the shorts Rye Rye wears in the opening shot was taken directly from the collection," Gurung told Stylelist. "When Rye Rye came in for her first fitting we knew exactly the looks that would complement her and bring the collection to life. The hardest part was editing down the options."
Gurung went on to explain that while he credits artist George Condo -- who painted the controversial album cover for Kanye West's 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' -- as an artistic inspiration, he has considered Rye Rye his "muse" since way back.
"When I first heard one of Rye Rye's mix-tapes some time back I was immediately taken by how unique and dynamic her music was," said Gurung. "Her authentic sound and tremendous energy was exactly what we were looking for, and I have always loved her bright, personal style."
The Baltimore MC was equally happy to work with the rising design star, exclaiming that her favorite look was the shiny silver, red and black dress she wore in the clip.
"It was just so fantabulous," Rye Rye said. "I never really wear things like that, so it made me feel so on top of the world -- sexy but cool because I was still dancing in the heels!"
