"We filmed it in February 2010 in the freezing cold and wet (which seems to be true of nearly all outdoors filming we organise)," guitarist/vocalist Matt Cooper tells Spinner. "The building is an abandoned grain silo, built by the Ministry of Food in 1940 in Oxfordshire, England. To say it is terrifying is an understatement: there are old, busted machines, covered in cobwebs and dirt. The floors have gaping holes in them, where the wood has rotted. It seemed like the perfect location for the video of 'Every Coin.'

"We found it a tricky song to work with, because the narrative is so blatant; you are faced with a choice, either you replicate the story of the man being forced to eat the contents of his wallet line-by-line, or make a performance video somehow capturing the dark aesthetic of the song. The building kind of felt suited to the latter, and with the inclusion of grain falling down on us, not only was the history and purpose of the building thrown up, but so was the idea of consumption (wallet/grain). We were tied by bits of rope to the building (the rope was later used to hand-bind a limited number of the UK copies) in boiler suits. Kind of like ghosts of the building I guess. So there was that element of the buildings history included too. Make the most of the surrounding was our rule for the shoot."
Unfortunately, not everything cooperated with the band on the set. "The generator broke too, within an hour of filming, so our cameraman had to speed through the shots to make the most of the natural light," Cooper says. "Not a day that we remember as being particularly fun, but rather a bit unsettling. I visited the site three times actually on scouting visits with a director friend and the band, so I knew what to expect, but on that overcast day in February it was kind of breathtaking -- an impressive, vast derelict building, soon to be destroyed.
"Oh, and an unimaginable amount of grain was used (if they didn't have a rat problem before, they do now!) and we didn't factor in the rash that having that much grain poured on you causes, so gigging that night was pretty unbearable! Also, you can see the pain on Joe's face as the sharp and pointy grain came pouring down on his bald unprotected head," Cooper adds about bassist Joe Charlett.
The band is on tour in the UK this summer and plans to head to the States in the fall. 'Pull Us Apart' is out now via Burning Building Recordings.
