The release of the Rhode Island band's first ever compilation coincides with the 25th anniversary of the indie group's debut album, 'Untitled.'
'Anthology' features 21 "personal favourites," a statement explains, put in "non-chronological sequence, which makes for interesting juxtapositions and encourages a reassessment of the music."
An initial limited release comes in a hardback book with a 22-track bonus disc of B-sides and rarities. In the record company statement, frontwoman Kristin Hersh promised her band will hit the road in support of its release.
"It's beautiful and substantial, thanks to awesome David Narcizo [and] Lakuna Design," she said, pointing out some of the goodies on offer, "including the original 'Lonely is an Eyesore' version of 'Fish,' the long-lost 'Hillbilly' and the original version of 'Back Road (Matter of Degrees).' And yes, the release will be supported by Throwing Muses live dates."
'Hillbilly' is previously unreleased, while 'Heel Toe' has only been put out in the US. The early version of 'Back Road' featuring Tanya Donnelly appeared in the film 'A Matter of Degrees' and on the rarities disc sits alongside a slew of cover versions -- 'Amazing Grace,' 'Manic Depression,' 'Ride Into the Sun,' 'Crayon Sun,' 'Jak,' 'If' and the Beatles' 'Cry Baby Cry.'
That last number is not be confused with the Muses' track with the same title that closes CD One. 'Anthology' is set for release on Sept. 5 via 4AD Records.
