Canadian Summer Festival Guide 2011 -- July (Part Two)

Can't Miss Acts:
Broken Social Scene: Still touring behind their 'Forgiveness Rock Record,' Toronto darlings Broken Social Scene will hit this festival before a trek with TV on the Radio begins later this summer. The group's latest video for the song 'Sweetest Kill' has got attention for its disturbing imagery. Here's hoping the axes stay well hidden while in Sudbury.
The Weakerthans: Longtime rock group the Weakerthans still remain criminally underrated. The band made a strong album with Jim Bryson called 'The Falcon Lake Incident' following last year's live album. The group led by John K. Samson opened up for Arcade Fire in Vienna last month before hitting select European festivals.
Can't Miss Acts:
Rise Against: Chicago punk rockers Rise Against will be in the midst of a Canadian tour when they touch down for Edgefest. The group led by singer-guitarist Tim McIIrath released their last studio album, 'Endgame,' this past March and even covered Bob Dylan's 'Ballad of Hollis Brown' to celebrate the icon's 70th birthday.
A Perfect Circle: With Maynard James Keenan swinging away from Tool temporarily, his other main squeeze A Perfect Circle mount their first proper tour in six years. A Perfect Circle are reportedly working on new material and will be "road testing" some of the new songs while on tour, including a stop at Lollapalooza in August. The band's last album was 2004's 'Emotive.'
Can't Miss Acts:
Luke Doucet and the White Falcon: Luke Doucet has carved a consistent career be it as a solo frontman, a touring musician with Sarah McLachlan or with a well-oiled rock group he currently has in the White Falcon. Doucet's latest album, 'Steel City Trailer,' has all the earmarks of a finely tuned Sloan record, with catchy melodies and infectious riffs. (Of course such a sound might have something to do with his producer, Sloan drummer Andrew Scott.
Owen Pallett: Arcade Fire alumnus Owen Pallett opted for his own name to release his latest solo album, 'Heartland.' Pallett, who won the 2006 Polaris Prize for 'He Poos Clouds' (an album made as Final Fantasy) will be playing alongside Fleet Foxes and old pals Win Butler and Co. this summer.
Can't Miss Act:
Paramore: Making only a handful of stops on Warped Tour but hitting both Montreal and Toronto, Paramore are finally distancing themselves from a messy 2010 that saw Josh Farro and Zac Farro leave the group. Fronted by Haley Williams, the outfit just released the single 'Monster' which will appear on the soundtrack to 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon.' Williams also recently announced Paramore started writing their fourth studio album.
Can't Miss Acts:
The Dears: Though the Montreal band recently appeared in a 'Funny or Die' sketch, chances are they'll be more focused on the riffs than getting you to crack a smile. But who knows, Natalia Yanchak recently stretched her creative legs by releasing some creative fiction so perhaps she might be as bold as to continue the Dears comedic trip. Either way, fans should lap up this performance as this gig is the last chance (announced at least) to catch the veterans live this summer.
Rural Alberta Advantage: Toronto indie rock trio Rural Alberta Advantage have had an epic year, celebrating the release (and acclaimed) of their sophomore album, 'Departing.' As of late, rumours have been circulating about "an all-night underwater video shoot" for the song 'Muscle Relaxants' but there's no word on when it'll be released -- we're guessing it will make quite the splash, though (sorry, we couldn't resist).
Can't Miss Act:
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros: This L.A. folk-rock ensemble made inroads with their single 'Home' which found its way onto commercials, television shows and even a ski movie directed by Warren Miller. Singer Alex Ebert -- who released a solo album 'Alexander!' between touring stretches -- and company seem like the perfect bohemian brothers (and sisters) to headline this harmonious event.
Can't Miss Acts:
Motorhead: One of a handful of bands performing in both cities, longtime British icons Motorhead still churn out louder than loud anthems. The band fronted by the legendary Lemmy issued a new studio album, 'The World Is Yours,' earlier this year -- definately not to be confused with the Glasvegas single of the same name.
Billy Talent: They're playing a few shows this summer before bunkering down to begin their next studio album, 'Billy Talent IV' -- an album which can't come a moment too soon for devote followers of the Juno-winning outfit. Frontman Ben Kowalewicz and crew will also light up the stage at a special benefit concert with Sum 41 in Vancouver a few days prior to the Heavy weekend. So, if you're a mega fan with some dough to drop (or better yet, a private jet), why not hit up their sets in all three cities.
Can't Miss Acts:
The Sadies: These countrifed rockers have had an eventful year, most of it good but singer-guitarist Dallas Good slipping on ice and breaking his leg certainly but a wrench in things. Now back on his feet (and, more importantly, back on the stage), Good to help spread the Sadies gospel with his bandmates. Check them out at Sappyfest before they saunter south of the border for a string of shows culminating with a gig in La-La Land Aug. 14.
Charles Bradley: Known as 'The Screaming Eagle of Soul,' Charles Bradley saw his life-long dream realized earlier this year with the release of his debut, 'No Time for Dreaming.' The singer spent most of his life pursuing his dream on the side when not being a full-time chef so we salute him for sticking with it, and you can do the same at Sappyfest.
Can't Miss Acts:
Eminem: Making one of only four North American tour stops at Osheaga, Eminem could easily be the highlight of the whole weekend. The Detroit rapper's latest album, 'Recovery,' scored with fans but now he's decided to test the waters teaming with Royce Da 5'9" under the bad-ass banner Bad Meets Evil. Though we could a taste of that project in May when the duo released the first single, 'Fast Lane,' from their forthcoming album, Osheaga is all Slim Shady, -- at least until the rumour mill tells us otherwise.
The Flaming Lips: Wayne Coyne might very well be rolling around in a huge transparent orb while he and his band perform 1999's 'The Soft Bulletin' in its entirety at Osheaga. Even without the party tricks (and the Flaming Lips have a lot of them), the legendary rockers should have no problem mesmerize Montrealers and out-of-towners alike. After all, this is a record so adored it's considered Flaming Lips' 'Pet Sounds.'
