In Their Words: "The back-story to this song refers to a story made popular on 'This American Life' a few years back about a 9-year-old Michigan girl's pen pal correspondence with Panamanian despot, Manuel Noriega, spurred on by an admiration for his green hat she'd seen him wearing on television. He ended up flying the child and her mother down to Panama for an up close and personal tour of his compound and country, to demonstrate that he wasn't such a bad dude. The mother and child accepted, and the lyrics are an imagined retelling of their correspondence and subsequent meeting. In falsetto, I play the role of Noreiga, and the voice of the 9-year old girl is handled by the gruff, full throated hunk-of-a-man, Ryan Kattner." -- Nick Thorburn
