Allman Brothers Jam With David Crosby, Graham Nash, Natalie Cole, Phil Lesh + More at Hep C Benefit

What a night.

In support of Gregg Allman's battle with Hepatitis C, the Allman Brothers Band put on a star-studded benefit show at New York's Beacon Theatre. The concert, dubbed "Tune in to Hep C" and broadcast on SiriusXM, featured not only the Brothers' trademark blues jams and the dueling guitars of Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, but also guest appearances by Natalie Cole, David Crosby and Graham Nash, saxophonist Bill Evans, Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, Gov't Mule keyboardist Danny Louis and ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons.

The event, which raised $250,000 for the American Liver Foundation and the National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable, began with a video of Allman discussing his disease, which resulted in him needing a liver transplant. The illness certainly hasn't slowed him down -- beginning with 'Don't Want You No More' and 'It's Not My Cross to Bear,' Allman's vocals sounded as strong as ever. The first of the evening's two sets featured some Allmans classics, such as 'One Way Out,' 'Statesboro Blues' and 'In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,' which closed the set and featured lengthy solos by Trucks, Haynes and Evans.

But the show-stopping moments in that set came courtesy of Natalie Cole, who has also battled Hep C. The 61-year-old joined the Brothers to belt out renditions of Sam Cooke's 'A Change Is Gonna Come' and the Band's 'The Weight,' both of which followed the Brothers' covers of Dr. John's 'I Walk on Gilded Splinters' and Van Morrison's 'Into the Mystic.' It was the second set that featured the biggest surprises. After a short break, David Crosby and Graham Nash took the stage with Trucks to perform the Crosby, Stills and Nash classic 'Teach Your Children.' The duo then followed that with 'Guinnevere' and 'Find the Cost of Freedom,' and then were joined by the full band and Phil Lesh for 'Cowboy Movie' and 'Almost Cut My Hair.' From there, the night turned into a mini-Dead tribute, with Lesh staying out to jam on 'Shakedown Street,' 'Sugaree' and 'Franklin's Tower.'

The Allmans got back to their own catalog with the second set's closer, an epic, phenomenal version of 'Whipping Post' that included Cole belting out some of the verses alongside Allman. For the encore, all of the guests returned with even more firepower, bringing along Gregg's son Devon Allman to help out on 'Midnight Rider,' and then ZZ Top's Gibbons for turn-of-the-century hymn 'Will the Circle Be Unbroken?' In the end, the concert lasted over three hours, but almost all in the audience showed no signs of being tired thanks to the incredible spectacle provided by the Allman Brothers Band and their friends.
