DeLois Barrett Campbell, Member of Gospel Trio the Barrett Sisters, Dead at 85
- Posted on Aug 3rd 2011 12:00PM by Theo Spielberg
Campbell died at Advocate Trinity Hospital in Chicago due to complications from pneumonia, according to her sister Billie Barrett Greenbey. As ABC reports, her daughter, Mary Campbell, revealed that the singer was visited in the hospital on Monday by Jennifer Hudson, who grew up listening to the trio.
The Barrett Sisters -- rounded out by third sister Rodessa Barrett Porter -- were raised on the South Side of Chicago. Campbell's powerful voice could have led her to mainstream success in any genre she wished; she chose Gospel music, and thus a life on the edge of the spotlight. Campbell grew up under the wing of two gospel greats: Composer Thomas A. Dorsey, who is considered the father of modern gospel, and Mahalia Jackson, widely reckoned the greatest gospel singer who ever lived.
The Barrett Sisters toured the world 50 times, appeared on Johnny Carson's 'The Tonight Show' and inspired scores of modern singers.
Campbell is survived by two daughters, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

To the Barrett 's/Campbell's family its a time of rejoicing knowing how much love and joy this gospel singer/mother /grandmother/family friend has inspired so many lives and will greatly missed on this earthly realm but all that knew and loved her with have so many memories and will rejoice on the celebration of her live and now she is with the "King' in heaven.Cry tears of loss and God will bottle them,so when you come to a crossroad these tears will show the way and you can eat the words of God and jump and shout because a great saint sung and taught you.May you have nothing but Peace and those who are missing come home to rejoice and stand with the family in Love.

She really a soul-stirring, down-home gospel singer that rocks your soul. If you would like to contact her, please let me know. I promise that you would not be disappointed if she granted a gospel singing audition.
