Jay-Z Shows Love for Elbow

Coldplay are not the only British guitar band to bowl over rapper Jay-Z. This summer, the hip-hop star has also admitted to becoming a fan of Mercury Prize winners Elbow.

Jay-Z was turned onto the lugubrious outfit after watching them perform from the side at this year's Glastonbury Festival. He and wife Beyoncé also caught Chris Martin's group in Somerset, but we already knew about that particular love-in.

BBC Radio 2 DJ Jo Whiley divulged the information at the family-friendly Camp Bestival, reports Bang Showbiz (via Musicrooms.net). She revealed to BANG Showbiz, how she "watched Elbow with him at Glastonbury ... He was just there at the side of the stage."

Whiley explained she felt a bit sorry for him. "Because he is who he is, nobody talks to him, so he just stands there on his own looking a little bit lonely and forlorn; and, because he'd been on the Live Lounge on my [previous Radio One] show, I stood and chatted to him."

Apparently, the rap mogul was intrigued by Guy Garvey and his bandmates. He "was saying, 'Tell me about this band, who are they, what have they done?'" He appeared "genuinely, really interested, and he did love Elbow."

There's no hint that Jay-Z actually wants to work with the boys from Bury, unlike Scottish blues warbler Paolo Nutini, who also impressed him. The rapper said he would like to collaborate with him due to the solo artist's soulful voice.
