In an e-mail to the newspaper, the strip's creator Shawn Demumbrum explained the inspiration behind the series.
He said: "As a teen in the '80s, one of my favourite soundtracks was the 'Pretty in Pink' soundtrack. While training for cross country, I played the cassette over and over on my Walkman as I ran."
He added, "There was always something about the Smiths' 'Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want.' It tapped into my teenage psyche, a combination of loneliness and yet hopeful optimism, that only Morrissey's vocals seem to capture."
Demumbrum has already commissioned 13 writer/artist teams who will each tackle a classic from the Smiths' back catalogue. All that remains is for him to raise the necessary £1,841 ($3,000) needed to cover printing costs, ISBN codes and those all important song licences. Let's hope he achieves his target lest it all becomes a case of 'I Started Something I Couldn't Finish'.
