The as-yet-untitled film will start shooting in November in New York and Memphis, where Buckley drowned in 1997. The movie will be directed by Jake Scott ('Welcome to the Rileys') and has the full support of Buckley's mother, Mary Guibert.
"We are over the moon that Reeve has agreed to take on this challenging role," Guibert said of the casting news in a statement. "He's been getting ready for this all his life. It certainly doesn't hurt that he looks so much like Jeff."
In addition to starring in the U2-penned musical, Carney has had some success with his own rock band, Carney. And, this movie is not to be confused with 'Greeting From Tim Buckley,' which will star Penn Badgley as Jeff.
