Phoenix Frontman Thomas Mars Marries Sofia Coppola

When French indie-rock greats Phoenix finally release the follow-up to their 2009 breakthrough 'Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix,' singer Thomas Mars might have an in with a good video director.

Earlier today (Aug. 27), Mars married longtime girlfriend Sofia Coppola -- the creative force behind such films as 'The Virgin Suicides' and 'Lost in Translation,' as well as a handful of notable music videos -- in Bernalda, Italy.

The small town figures prominently in Coppola lore; it's the birthplace of Sofia's great-grandfather Agostino, who emigrated to the United States at the turn of the century.

Sofia's father, legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, escorted his daughter down the aisle, and Bernalda's mayor, Leonardo Chiruzzi, performed the ceremony, our sister site the Huffington Post reports. Mars met Sofia in 1999, when he worked with Air on a track for 'The Virgin Suicides' soundtrack, and in 2006, the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter named Romy. A second daughter, Cosima, followed in 2010.

According to sources, guests at the low-key, 100-person affair included Johnny Depp and Sofia's aunt Talia Shire, the actress best known as Adrian to Sylvester Stallone's 'Rocky.'

"If they wanted to do a Hollywood wedding, they wouldn't have done it here," Chiruzzi told the Huffington Post. "[They] chose to do it here because it's here -- it's here that is beautiful." Amadeus Phoenix.'
