Woman's Skull Fractured by Falling Stones at STS9's Red Rocks Concert

Colorado's famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre, just west of Denver, has played host to many of music's most celebrated acts, including the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and the Grateful Dead. But now, the storied venue is the site of what could have been a tragedy on par with this summer's stage collapses.

In the early hours of Sunday, Sept. 11, large rocks began to fall into the crowd during an STS9 concert, injuring seven people. One of the victims was 34-year-old Jennifer Ackerman, who is now in Saint Anthony Hospital's ICU after suffering a skull fracture and several serious injuries to her face, including a 10-centimeter gash on her head. Police are still unsure of what caused the rocks to fall.

Ackerman's cousin, Jancy Polzkill, attended the concert with her. "I heard a big bang," Polzkill told Denver's local Fox news. "Turned around and she was face down on the ground."

Authorities are still unsure if the rocks fell naturally, were thrown or fell due to people climbing in restricted areas, though they assure fans that the amphitheatre is still completely safe. Ackerman, a mother of two, could be released from the ICU this week.
