"We've got families," Tea Party bassist Stuart Chatwood told BusinessWeek [via AUX] as to why the group might cash in on the site name, which they've owned since 1993.
"We've considered lending the name to Stephen Colbert or Jon Stewart to have them dispel some of the stuff that the Tea Party says," he adds. "As Canadians, we're somewhat sensitive to all the criticism of socialized medicine."
But it seems that the money they could nab from wealthy investors aligned with the Tea Party movement may be more enticing than "lending out" the site since it's not exactly chump change that's on the table. "It's easy to expect teaparty.com to go for well over $1 million," speculated Warren Adelman of the web hosting company GoDaddy.com.
In the meantime, though, the band -- reunited after six years to play a few one-off dates and reportedly tour Australia -- have put up a banner on the site that reads "No politics...Just Rock and Roll." This should hopefully clear up any confusion for those American Tea Party supporters surfing the web and finding only a '90s rock band steeped in Canadian socialism.
