"Surgeons were able to remove 90% of the tumor and decided to stop there as her vital signs were unsteady," Bob shares on the band's website. "Following surgery, she suffered a stroke. Her condition was critical for the next several days as her brain continued to swell. In an attempt to save her remaining good brain she was placed in a coma for five days."
Hallie has already undergone a second surgery and continues to fight for her life. "The tumor is a Grade 3 Ependymoma," her dad explains. "This is a very rare, but deadly brain tumor that affects roughly 100 children a year in the United States. We do not know what Hallie's next step is in her treatment. Her situation is very fluid and there are a number of complicating factors, but we do know that she is fighting hard every day."
The multi-instrumentalist is grateful for the support from friends and fans. "My wife Melanie and I would like to thank everyone for their love, care, and support during the most difficult time in our lives. I would like to thank everyone for their understanding of the gravity of this situation and ask for respect to our privacy. When people ask us what they can do to help, we ask them to pray for Hallie's recovery. We feel that God has already worked miracles through Hallie and we pray they keep coming."
While it's undetermined when he will return to the band, Bob recently told Spinner's sister site The Boot the Avett Brothers are working on the follow-up to their 2009 album, 'I and Love and You,' but are in no rush to release new tunes. "We used to put out an album a year, but now we are on a longer cycle. That means more time for the songs to mature and grow after they are written. This is just the next step for us, whatever that is."
There's no word yet on who will take over as bass player for the band while on tour. The Avett Brothers upcoming concert schedule includes shows in Tennessee, North Carolina and Texas. See their concert schedule here.

May God be with your beautiful daughter. He took mine some years ago (04), after she battled leukemia for a year. Don't let the doctors try to tell you you don't know what you're talking about if you tell them something is wrong. Fight for her. Maybe if I had, my daughter would still be here. Good luck to you and your family, and especially your little angel. You and she are in my prayers. I don't know you, but I know the hell of watching a child suffer. I hope they are able to make your baby well again. It's such a scary time when your child is ill. Again, you will be in my prayers. God bless you!

October 04 2011 at 9:03 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFather, I ask that your grace continue to manifest itself to this precious little baby girl and to her mother and father. I pray Father for the doctors and nurses that minister to this little baby, that you give them wisdom and guide their hands if more surgery is to come. It would be selfish of me Father if I didn't include all the little children that are sick or have difficult conditions with which they live. I pray also for all those that have prayed and those that need prayer. In Jesus name. Amen

October 04 2011 at 4:35 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNow that is a devoted father. FYI - my son and his friends collected over $1000. this weekend for their Penn State THON charity for children's cancer. Collectively the school has been know to raise several million dollars every year for this cause. I hope and pray Mr. Crawfords child has a complete recovery and goes on to lead a normal childhood and happy life. If I may add, please don't just walk by anyone shaking a can in front of a supermarket or convenience store, at least throw in some change. It could mean better treatments being researched or a cure down the road. Thanks!
October 04 2011 at 2:51 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMay God place a healing hand on your daughter. Despite what Dr's say, he has the last word. It is not to our own understanding, just trust in the Lord, it's all in his plan. God Bless you and your wife and may you have the strenght you need,

If one must pray in this, it should be for doctors & scientists to find how & why so many cancers start in so many more children these days.
He asks for prayers in the article. And it is appropriate to pray for all in this situation.

October 04 2011 at 1:03 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis is why we have to have more research and awareness for Childhood Cancers. 1 in every 300 children will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 20. Every day in the USA 46 children are diagnosed with cancer. Every day in the USA 7 children lose the battle. The American Cancer Society and Leukemia Society use our kids pictures and other way to make people believe they are supporting childhood cancer research. Not so. The American Cancer Society only gives .007 cents per dollar for childhood cancer. Look it up. It is all true. Why are the children left behind? Here is a video that shows how funding is distributed. There is a link that nationally shows where the funding goes.

Childhood cancer is the #1 disease killer in children. Yes, the # 1 disease killer in children. Why can't we get funding for research for childhood cancer? There haven't been any new cancer drugs developed for use in Childhood Cancer in over 20 years. The drugs the oncologist are using are the same old drugs used in different combination's. 80% or more children are on clinical trials, hardly any adults are on clinical trials. The adult's are benefiting for the clinical trials the kids are on. But, Childhood Cancer doesn't get near as much funding? Why? September in National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Their Ribbon Color is Gold. Please raise awareness for Childhood Cancer. The Children depend on it.
